Zahra Kazemi, Photo Journalist
Photo journalist Zahra Kazemi died on August 11, 2003 after being tortured and imprisoned in Tehran for taking photos of the grieving mothers of detainees waiting outside Evin prison. Her son has been fighting to get his mother justice, stating "When her story first hit the headlines there was outrage … Now the headlines are not there and people are forgetting her story." As a dual Canadian-Iranian citizen, her death in detention was the first death to gain international attention. She was awarded the Tara Singh Hayer memorial award in recognition for her defense of freedom of expression. Her photos documented the strength of women in exile, poverty, & facing oppression.
